Your Brand Is Already Being Summarised by AI.

Here’s How to Stay in Control of the Story.

A growing number of your customers are no longer starting with your homepage. They’re starting with a question typed into ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, or Perplexity: “What does this business actually do?” or “Is it any good?”

By the time they land on your site, they’ve already got an answer in their head. AI got there first, and it built that answer out of whatever it could find about you online: your website copy, your social content, your reviews, your product descriptions. If that material is thin, inconsistent, or scattered across ten different tones of voice, the AI doesn’t fill in the gaps for you. It just hands back a flat, generic version of your brand, the kind that sounds like it could belong to anyone in your category.

What’s Happening Right Now (whether You’ve Noticed or Not)

Search has quietly changed shape. AI Overviews now show up on a meaningful share of Google searches, and platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity are becoming a genuine starting point for people researching a purchase, not just a novelty. Instead of ten blue links, people are increasingly getting one synthesised answer, built from a handful of sources the AI decided to trust.

That means visibility isn’t only about ranking on page one anymore. It’s about whether the AI has enough clear, consistent material about your business to describe you accurately, and enough reason to trust what it found. Fragmented, vague messaging gets compressed into something forgettable. A clear, consistent story tends to come through intact.

Why So Many Brands Come Out Sounding the Same

There’s a quick way to test this yourself. Open an AI tool and ask: “What does Bright Light Marketing do, and how is it different from competitors in the same space?”

If the answer feels vague, generic, or interchangeable with a competitor, that’s not really the AI’s fault.

Three things usually cause it:

  • Vague positioning: The messaging gestures at what the business does rather than stating it plainly. AI has no patience for atmosphere, it looks for a clear, repeated claim it can hold onto.
  • Inconsistent language: Different words for the same idea across the website, socials and sales material. What feels like variety internally reads as noise to a system trying to spot a pattern.
  • No hierarchy: Everything is positioned as equally important, so nothing stands out as the one thing worth repeating.

Compression Isn’t the Problem. It’s the Proof.

None of this is a new problem, it’s the same discipline good brand strategy has always demanded: say one clear thing, back it up, and repeat it consistently. AI just removes the old buffers, the tone, the visual identity, the “feel” of a brand, that used to paper over unclear messaging. What’s left is the words alone, and whether they hold up under reduction.

If your brand can’t survive being boiled down to a sentence, it’s worth asking whether that sentence ever really existed in the first place.

Most Brands Lose the Plot Because They Ramble Instead of Repeat

Human readers will tolerate a brand that circles the point across a long about page or switches up its language to sound fresh. AI won’t. It rewards repetition and hierarchy, not variety for its own sake.

What you say consistently becomes central to how you’re understood. What you only say once becomes background noise, easy for a summary to drop entirely.

The Message Stack Every Brand Needs Now

If you want more control over how AI (and people) describe you, this is the groundwork:

  • One plain sentence. What you do and who it’s for, stated simply rather than cleverly, used the same way everywhere.
  • A small handful of proof points. Distinct, non-overlapping, and repeated consistently rather than reinvented per channel.
  • Language you commit to. The specific words and phrases you want associated with your brand, used deliberately.
  • Language you avoid. Anything that blurs your position or pulls you into a category you don’t want to compete in.
  • Regular updates. AI tools favour brands with fresh, current content. Stale pages quietly drop out of the picture.

The Bottom Line

Your brand is already being summarised, right now, whether you’ve shaped that story or not. The businesses staying visible aren’t necessarily the flashiest, they’re the ones being clear and consistent about who they are and what they offer.
